Psoriasis is uncontagious. It is a skin condition wherein rapid skin cell multiplication and the build up of the same causes red, dry patches of thickened skin, dry flakes and skin scales. In general, commonly affected areas tend to be the elbows, knees, and scalp. But it can occur all over the body as well.
This condition, which is chronic, occurs in varying levels. Some people get a very mild version and have such small and faint dry skin patches they don’t even realize they have psoriasis. Others have such severe conditions that they can even be covered from head to foot with thick, red, scaly skin.
Psoriasis can take on different appearances on different people. Variants include small flattened bumps or large thick plaques of raised skin, red patches, and pink mildly dry skin to big flakes of dry skin that flake off.
The different types of psoriasis are psoriasis vulgaris (common type), guttate psoriasis (small, drop like spots), inverse psoriasis (occurs in the folds like of the underarms, navel, and buttocks), and pustular psoriasis (liquid-filled yellowish small blisters).
The cause of psoriasis is still under investigation. Theories about its causes include genetic predisposition, environmental factors or problems with the immune system.

Treatment wise, the treatment varies according to the intensity of the condition. When less than 10% of the total skin surface is affected, creams, lotions, and sprays are usually prescribed. When 20% or more of the total skin surface is affected then systemic or total body treatments such as pills, light treatments, or injections are used.
